Theme: Revenge
I believe Revenge plays a major role in the novel a "Midsummers Night Dream" by Shakespaere. I believe this because in the novel The Cupid misses the Mermaid and hits the flowers behind her making the flowers magical. Then Oberon sends Puck to get the flowers to put the juice on Titania's eyes at night because she would not give up the Indian boy. When puck returns Oberon puts the juice on Titania's eyeliuds and she awakens to love Oberon. Giving Oberon the perfect timing to take the Indian boy away.
Theme: Manipulated Love Equals Disasterous
One of the themes that can be seen in Act 2
is that if love is manipulated, it can have disastrous results.
A long time ago Titania made a promise
to her friend that she will take care of his kid when he dies, the problem is
Oberon wanted the kid for his army but Titania refused to give the child away.
“For Oberon is passing fell and wrath / because that she as her attendant hath a
lovely boy / stol’n from an Indian King – and jealous Oberon would have the
child” (2. 1. 20-24) Oberon was of course very annoyed so he sent Puck, a
mischievous fairy, to go to the bottom of the ocean and retrieve a magical
flower. He wanted to juice Titania
so she will fall in love with someone or something else and forget about the
boy. He did so successfully and Titania fell in love with an
ass.
Along the way he overheard Demetrius and
Helena arguing and he thought it would be a great idea to tell puck to use the
juice and make Demetrius fall in love with Helena. It went completely wrong when
Puck juiced Lysander instead of Demetrius and he fell in love with Helena
instead. “Not Hermia but Helena I love: Who will not change a raven for a dove?”
(2. 2. 119-120) after making this mistake, Puck juiced Demetrius and he also
fell in love with Helena. At first no one loved Helena, but now both lovers of
Hermia loves Helena, leaving poor Hermia confused and heart broken.
Finally
after all the confusion and drama between the couples, Oberon got the child,
Titania fell in love with an ass and puck finally got the juicing right and
Lysander loved his one and only true love Hermia, and Demetrius still is under
the spell and loves Helena.
Love is a very delicate and precious
thing that only lucky people will truly know the meaning of. Something small
like a little misunderstanding can ruin everything for the couple, so be careful
next time with what couple you mess up with because you wouldn’t want it to
happen to you when you found your “one and
only.”
